Frequenly Asked Questions

What Is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine is a patient-centered, root-cause approach that looks at how your biology, lifestyle, and environment interact to create symptoms. Instead of treating each symptom in isolation, we map the systems involved (digestion, hormones, immune, metabolism, nervous system), run targeted testing when useful, and build a personalized plan – nutrition, sleep, movement, stress support, and (when needed) medications or supplements – to help you feel and function better.

Key Points

  • Root-Cause Care: We ask “Why is this happening?” and then address the drivers – not just the symptoms.
  • Whole-Person View: We connect dots across gut, hormones, thyroid, immune, metabolism, and nervous system, plus sleep, stress, and nutrition.
  • Targeted Testing (Not Over-Testing): We use standard bloodwork first; specialty labs (e.g., stool, SIBO, DUTCH, genetics) only when results could change your plan.
  • Personalized Plan: Food, sleep, movement, stress tools, and – when appropriate – medications and evidence-informed supplements.
  • Team + Timeline: Expect steady progress over weeks to months, with check-ins to adjust your plan.
  • Local Note: In Boston, MA, Carolina Integrative Medicine offers advanced functional medicine testing, lifestyle medicine, and telehealth options.

What It Means

Functional medicine is a way of practicing medicine that focuses on how your body’s systems work together. Many chronic symptoms – fatigue, brain fog, sleep issues, bloating, weight changes, skin flares, perimenopause concerns, thyroid symptoms – have shared drivers (inflammation, insulin resistance, micronutrient gaps, gut imbalance, stress dysregulation).  By understanding those drivers, we can design a plan that improves your daily function, not just your lab numbers. Think of it as moving from “What diagnosis fits these symptoms?” to “What’s the underlying pattern – and how do we correct it?

How It Works / What’s Involved

Getting started is straightforward:

  1. Deep Intake & Timeline We map your health story, major stressors, triggers, and turning points. This reveals patterns standard 10-minute visits often miss.
  2. Baseline Labs (As Indicated) We start with evidence-based bloodwork (CBC/CMP, lipids, A1C/fasting glucose/insulin, thyroid panel with antibodies when appropriate, vitamin D, iron/ferritin, B12/folate). These guide a safe, personalized plan.
  3. Targeted Specialty Testing (Case-By-Case) When results could change care, we may add GI stool testing (e.g., microbiome, inflammation), breath tests for SIBO, DUTCH urine hormones for metabolite patterns, or genetic and nutrient testing. We discuss pros/cons, limits, and costs first.
  4. Personalized Plan
    • Nutrition: Practical upgrades (protein, fiber, balanced meals, elimination/add-back if needed).
    • Sleep & Stress: Routines, light exposure, nervous system tools.
    • Movement: Realistic strength + daily steps.
    • Supplements/Meds: Used judiciously, with clear timing, dose, and duration.
  5. Follow-Ups & Course-Correcting Check-ins at 4–12 weeks to track wins, remove roadblocks, and adjust based on symptoms + labs. Expect steady, sustainable progress – not overnight fixes.

Is Functional Medicine Right For Me?

It’s a good fit if you want a collaborative plan that addresses why symptoms are happening and you’re open to lifestyle changes alongside medical care. It’s especially helpful for multi-symptom cases where “normal labs” don’t match how you feel. People with urgent or emergency symptoms still need conventional acute care first. Functional medicine works with your current doctors and medications – we coordinate so care stays safe and integrated.

Safety, Side Effects & When To Seek Care

Plans are built around safe, stepwise changes. If we use supplements or medications, we review interactions, allergies, and contraindications. Seek urgent care immediately for red-flag symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, severe abdominal pain, fainting, confusion, or stroke-like symptoms.
