The Truth About Hormones After 40: Why Your Body Feels Off Even When Your Labs Look Normal

One of the hardest things I hear from women in their 40s and 50s is this:

"My doctor says everything looks normal... but I know something isn't right."

They're exhausted by the end of the day. They're not sleeping well. They can't seem to lose weight, even though they're eating the same way they always have. They feel anxious, overwhelmed, and like they've become a different person almost overnight.

If that sounds familiar, I want you to know something:

You know your body better than anyone. If something feels off, don't ignore it.

Many women have already had basic lab work done. They're told everything looks fine, so they leave with birth control pills, an antidepressant, or the reassurance that it's "just part of getting older."

But here's what I've learned after years of caring for women in this stage of life:

Sometimes it's not that nothing is wrong—it's that we're simply not looking in the right places.

That's why one question always guides my approach:

Why do you feel this way?

Because until we answer that question, we're only treating symptoms—not understanding what's causing them.

Hormones Matter, but They're Not the Whole Story

Hormones absolutely change as we age. That's normal.

But in my experience, hormones are only one piece of the puzzle.

When women come to see me because they're tired, struggling with brain fog, gaining weight, or waking up at 3 a.m. every night, I rarely stop at estrogen or progesterone. I almost always end up looking at stress, gut health, nutrition, inflammation, thyroid function, and how the body has been responding to years of everyday stress.

Instead of asking,

"Which medication matches this symptom?"

I ask,

"Why is your body struggling in the first place?"

That's where the real conversation begins.

One of the First Places I Look Is the Gut

Even when someone comes to me because of hormones, one of the first places I look is gut health.

I often tell patients to think of the gut as their "inside skin."

It does so much more than digest food. It's involved in nutrient absorption, immune health, inflammation, and hormone balance. And just because you don't have digestive symptoms doesn't necessarily mean everything is working the way it should.

Over the years, I've seen gut imbalances show up in unexpected ways—fatigue, brain fog, stubborn weight gain, food sensitivities, and that feeling of simply running on empty.

When we begin restoring gut health, it's amazing how often other pieces start improving too.

Looking Beyond One Symptom

During a recent podcast interview, we also talked about supporting people who are going through, or recovering from, cancer treatment.

I always want to be clear about this:

I don't treat cancer, and I believe conventional treatments like surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation are often necessary.

While cancer treatment focuses on the disease, my role is to help support the rest of your body through the process.

Many people are left dealing with inflammation, nutrient depletion, gut issues, fatigue, poor sleep, and weakened immune function. My goal is to help restore the body's foundation through nutrition, gut health, movement, stress management, and reducing inflammation.

Whether someone is navigating hormone changes or recovering from a major health challenge, my philosophy stays the same:

How can we help your body do the job it was designed to do?

Start with the Foundations

Patients often ask me where they should begin.

My answer is usually much simpler than they expect.

Start by paying attention to your food. Ask yourself:

Is this giving my body the fuel it needs—or creating more work for it?

Then focus on the basics that are easy to overlook:

  • Prioritize quality sleep.
  • Find healthy ways to manage stress.
  • Move your body every day, even if it's simply taking a walk.

I know those things sound simple, but they're often the first place we start because they give your body the support it needs to heal.

Small, consistent changes really do make a difference.

Trust What Your Body Is Telling You

One of the things I hear most often from women is,

"I just want to feel like myself again."

If that's where you are, you're not alone.

One of the most important things I tell my patients is this:

Trust yourself.

If something doesn't feel right, don't ignore it simply because someone told you your labs are normal.

Your body is always giving you clues.

Sometimes you simply need someone willing to listen, connect the dots, and look beyond a standard lab report.

That's what I love about integrative medicine. It allows me to step back and look at the bigger picture. Instead of focusing on one symptom or one lab value, we ask why you're feeling this way in the first place, and what your body needs to heal and function at its best.

If you've been feeling like you've lost yourself—or you're simply saying, "I just want to feel like myself again," know that you don't have to settle for feeling this way.

There are answers, and together we can start finding them.

If you're ready to better understand what's happening in your body and explore a more personalized approach to your health, I'd love to help.
