Does This Sound Like You?

Are you feeling so fatigued that even light movement or trying to get through your day can be a chore?

Perhaps you are feeling extremely stressed or anxious because you can't perform well at work and aren't able to support your family like you used to?

Do you experience "mystery aches and pains" that are slowing you down... which your doctor explains away as "old age"?

Or perhaps you've been to your doctor only to be hit with a "chronic fatigue" diagnosis and no clue what to do next. The truth is, chronic fatigue is oftentimes a blanket diagnosis when doctors don't have the tools or know-how to get to the bottom of your health concerns, which are typically multiple-factorial in nature. While they may do a physical exam or basic bloodwork, both can miss more serious health imbalances to blame for your total lack of energy.

The Conventional Approach To CFS

The conventional approach to treating chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is focused on the emotional and mindset spectrum of treatment, all while the physiological root causes go undetected.

Oftentimes, doctors will prescribe antidepressants when they don't see anything obvious in your blood work and can't give you convincing explanations about the root cause of your symptoms.

Sadly, the label of chronic fatigue is given while something more serious could be spiraling out of control – and is now impacting hormonal balance, brain health, and even cellular health.

Some of the imbalances at play can include gut dysbiosis – such as SIBO, leaky gut, and/or Candida overgrowth.

A poor diet, stealth infections, an undiagnosed food allergy, hormone imbalances such as hypothyroidism, low testosterone, progesterone or estrogen, exposure to environmental toxins like mold are all potential causes of chronic fatigue that go completely overlooked in the conventional treatment approach.

The Functional Medicine Approach

When it comes to chronic fatigue syndrome, it’s important to work with a functional medicine practitioner who can not only help with the mindset/emotional component but also runs the correct testing to determine if a hormone imbalance, gut disorders, food allergies or other imbalances are to blame for your chronic fatigue symptoms.

At Carolina Integrative Medicine, our team takes a holistic approach to any chronic disorder – including chronic fatigue. In fact, it’s less about the official label (being diagnosed with CFS), and more about investigating the “why.”

Once we do the correct testing, we craft a precise treatment plan unique to your needs that includes all the elements you need to finally leave your chronic fatigue behind.

This can include treatments like bioidentical hormone replacement that can help to rebalance your body and kick chronic fatigue to the curb.

Safety

Our goal is to help you get your energy back in a steady, safe way. When we calm stress, improve sleep, balance meals, and support key nutrients, many people notice fewer energy crashes, clearer thinking, and less “wired-and-tired” feeling. Mornings get easier, afternoons feel steadier, and you can do more without paying for it later. If you’re already using medications or have other diagnoses, we coordinate with your prescribing clinician so your plan fits your whole health picture.

Safety comes first. If you have chest pain, trouble breathing, new one-sided weakness, confusion, a very high fever, or signs of severe infection, seek urgent care. If activity or stress makes your symptoms much worse for a day or more (often called “post-exertional malaise”), we’ll help you pace your day so you can do more with fewer setbacks. If you might be pregnant or are breastfeeding, please tell us so we can tailor your plan.

FAQs

Is chronic fatigue the same as ME/CFS?

Not always. “Chronic fatigue” is a symptom that can have many causes. ME/CFS is a specific medical condition with hallmark features like deep fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest, unrefreshing sleep, and post-exertional malaise. We look at your full story to see what fits you best.

Why do I feel worse after activity?

Many people with ME/CFS have post-exertional malaise—symptoms get worse after physical or mental effort. We teach pacing: break tasks into smaller parts, rest before you crash, and slowly rebuild capacity.

My basic labs were “normal.” Now what?

Standard tests can miss low-grade issues like poor sleep quality, blood sugar swings, nutrient gaps, or thyroid patterns. We take a whole-person view and focus on changes that help you feel better in daily life.

How long until I feel better?

Some notice steadier mornings and fewer crashes within a few weeks. Bigger, more stable changes usually build over 8–12 weeks as habits settle and we fine-tune your plan.

Do I have to push through exercise?

No. For many with ME/CFS, graded exercise without pacing can backfire. We start with pacing and gentle, tolerable movement only as your system allows. Follow your body, not the clock.

Can I work with you if I’m on medication?

Yes. We partner with your prescribing clinician and adjust your plan so it’s safe and realistic.

Do you offer telehealth?

Telehealth is available after your first in-person visit at Carolina Integrative Medicine.

What happens in the discovery call?

We’ll review your goals and history and outline smart first steps. We can go over specific tests, treatments, and services as part of that call.
