Glow Like a Star: Celebrity Skincare Hacks That Work

Let me paint you a picture.

I’m a mom of four girls, and my youngest is just entering her teenage years. That means five women under one roof, and if you can imagine… there are bottles everywhere. Cleansers, serums, masks, trends from TikTok, recommendations from friends, you name it, we’ve probably tried it.

And yet, despite all of that, I find myself coming back to the same conversation, both at home and in my medical practice:

👉 We’re overcomplicating skincare.

As a physician trained in integrative and functional medicine, I approach skin differently, not as something to “fix” with more products, but as something to understand, support, and protect from the inside out.

A Quick Reality Check: Your Skin Is an Organ

Before we talk about routines or products, let’s ground this in science.

👉 The skin is the largest organ in our body.

It’s not just a surface. It’s a dynamic, living system that:

  • Protects you from environmental toxins
  • Regulates temperature
  • Supports immune function
  • Hosts a complex ecosystem of microorganisms (your skin microbiome)

That means your skin is constantly responding to what you:

  • Eat
  • Drink
  • Touch
  • Breathe
  • Experience (yes—even stress)

So when your skin changes, it’s not random.
👉 It’s information.

Why I Actually Recommend Silk Pillowcases

With four daughters, I’ve heard every beauty tip out there, including the celebrity favorite: silk pillowcases.

But here’s why I genuinely support it, not as a trend, but as a practical tool.

You spend hours each night with your face pressed against your pillow. That contact matters.

Silk pillowcases:

  • Create less friction, reducing sleep lines and irritation
  • Are less absorbent than cotton, helping your skin retain moisture
  • Tend to be less hospitable to bacterial buildup

It’s a small shift, but one that supports your skin passively, every single night.

The Skincare Step Most People Forget

This is one I talk about often, with my patients and yes, even my daughters:

Clean your phone.

It’s one of the most overlooked contributors to breakouts.

Your phone collects:

  • Oil from your hands
  • Environmental debris
  • Bacteria from surfaces you don’t even think about

Then we press it directly against our skin.

I’ve seen patients struggle with persistent acne along the cheeks and jawline—and sometimes, this is the missing link.

A simple habit:

  • Wipe your phone daily
  • Use headphones when possible

👉 It’s not glamorous, but it’s effective.

Sleep: The Most Underrated Skincare Strategy

In our home, with busy schedules and growing kids, I understand how easy it is to deprioritize sleep.

But I remind my patients, and my own family, of this truth:

👉 You cannot outpace poor sleep with good products.

During sleep:

  • Skin cells repair and regenerate
  • Collagen production increases
  • Inflammation decreases

And here’s where I challenge the norm:

Your nighttime routine doesn’t need to be complicated.

In fact, I often recommend the opposite:

  • A gentle cleanse
  • Minimal products
  • Consistency

Because the real work happens when your body is at rest.

A More Thoughtful Approach to Caffeine

This is where I like to bring awareness, not restriction.

Caffeine, alcohol, and other stimulants can:

  • Constrict blood vessels
  • Limit nutrient and oxygen delivery to the skin
  • Contribute to dryness and dullness

I’m not here to take away your morning coffee.

But I do encourage patients to ask:
👉 Is this supporting my body or just getting me through the day?

Simple adjustments, like incorporating herbal teas or improving hydration, can make a noticeable difference over time.

Hydration: Simple, Foundational, Powerful

If there’s one habit I consistently reinforce at home and in my practice, it’s this:

Drink more water.

Hydration impacts:

  • Skin elasticity
  • Detoxification
  • Circulation
  • Overall skin vitality

I also encourage minimizing plastic use when possible. In functional medicine, we consider total toxic exposure, and even small changes can reduce that burden over time.

What I Teach My Daughters (And My Patients)

Living in a home filled with strong, growing young women has shaped how I talk about health, including skincare.

I don’t teach them to chase perfection.

I teach them to:

  • Listen to their bodies
  • Keep things simple
  • Make consistent, supportive choices

Because the goal isn’t flawless skin.

👉 It’s healthy, resilient skin that reflects a well-supported body.

Why This Matters More Than You Think

When patients come to me with skin concerns, I don’t just look at their skincare routine.

I look deeper:

  • Hormonal balance
  • Gut health
  • Stress levels
  • Nutrition
  • Environmental exposures

Because your skin is often the first place imbalances show up.

And when we address those root causes…everything begins to shift.

If you’ve been cycling through products without real results, it may be time to approach your skin and your health differently.
